Synced subtitles on Android TV, Samsung TV, phones and Nuvio: which apps work
Updated
Subtitle Sync for Stremio can time a subtitle to your video only when the app tells it which file is playing: its name, its size or its fingerprint. Stremio’s own apps do, on computers, phones and TVs, and so does Nuvio’s Android TV app. Nuvio’s phone app and some other apps send nothing about the file, so there every subtitle comes as it was uploaded.
What each app sends
| App | What it tells subtitle addons | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Stremio on Windows, Mac and Linux | The file’s name, size and fingerprint | Synced subtitles |
| Stremio on Android phones and Android TV | The file’s name and size, and usually its fingerprint | Synced subtitles |
| The older Stremio desktop app (version 4.4) | The file’s size and fingerprint, not its name | Synced subtitles |
| Stremio on Samsung and LG TVs | Usually the file’s details; a few TV versions send none | Synced subtitles when they do |
| Stremio in a web browser (web.stremio.com) | Not the file’s name | Timed against a matching OpenSubtitles file, or shown as uploaded |
| Nuvio’s Android TV app | The file’s fingerprint, size and name | Synced subtitles |
| Nuvio’s app for LG TVs | Often nothing about the file | Subtitles as uploaded when it sends nothing |
| Nuvio’s phone app | Nothing about the file | Subtitles as uploaded, and a row that says why |
| Other apps built for Stremio addons | Some send nothing about the file | The same as Nuvio’s phone app, when they send nothing |
Why the file matters
Two copies of the same film can differ by seconds, or run at another speed. A subtitle can only be lined up with the copy you are watching if the addon knows which copy that is. With the file’s details it can find the file through your stream addon or your TorBox account and read the video’s own subtitle track, or find an OpenSubtitles subtitle matched to that exact file. Without them, it can only guess from the film’s title, and it does not guess: the subtitles are shown as uploaded and labelled so.
When your app sends nothing
- Use Stremio’s own app on that device if there is one: it sends the file’s details.
- Pick a subtitle whose name matches your file’s name: it was most likely made for your copy.
- Move the timing by hand with the player’s delay control, if it has one: how to fix subtitles that are out of sync.
- The list ends with one more row, “ℹ️ Why these subtitles are not synced” (apps that show only the addon’s name show it as the last row): picking it shows the reason in the player.
Setting it up on a TV or phone
Install Subtitle Sync for Stremio once, on a computer or at web.stremio.com, with the same Stremio account your TV and phone use. They pick it up by themselves. Stremio’s TV and phone apps have no box for an addon link, which is why the install happens on a computer.
To have the synced subtitle turned on when a film starts, tell Stremio your subtitle language: in its settings, under Player, choose the default subtitles language. More answers.
When none of your languages has a subtitle, the AI translation shows as a row like any other, in every app that lists this addon’s subtitles: how the free AI translation works.
